The first 13 months of the journey were spent in preparation for New Horizon's encounter with Juipter down the road.

On Februray 28th, 2007 New Horizons passed the Red Giant within 32 Jupiter radii of the planet at 51,000MPH.

“New Horizons is healthy and cruising quietly through deep space – nearly three billion miles from home – but its rest is nearly over,” says Alice Bowman, New Horizons mission operations manager. “It’s time for New Horizons to wake up, get to work, and start making history.”
